Matt Oppenheim, Ph.D, Director

Matt’s passion is fostering community transformation. For thirty years he has worked in youth development, community organizing and education at all levels. In his PhD dissertation,Mayan leaders in a Guatemalan community tell the story of transformation from indentured laborers to the nexus of producers and consumers cooperatives and a network of indigneous schools.  His MA tells the story of transformation of parents and youth in Los Angeles in building community empowerment. His current passion is service learning, where youth apply their academics and learn life-long skills through community projects and education at colleges and universities focused on experiential learning, social justice and civic engagement. His heart remains in the many indigenous and marginalized communities that invited him to share life and spirituality together. His work with the Prout Research Institute of New Mexico is to bring to life the social vision of Prout through practical local projects; the enhancement of social cooperation; the organizing of diverse peoples to implement the principles of Economic Democracy (See “What is Prout”), and to experience the spirit of community through collective research and projects.
